In a significant political shift, ERC (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya) has reached a preliminary agreement with the PSC (Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya) to invest Salvador Illa as the new president of Catalonia.
This deal, which will be voted on by ERC's members, includes a major change in the region's fiscal autonomy, allowing Catalonia to exit the common financing regime and manage all taxes, starting with the income tax in 2026. The agreement also establishes a new Department of Language Policy to promote the use of Catalan and creates a National Convention to address ongoing political conflicts.
Critics, including the PP and Vox, have condemned the deal, arguing it undermines fiscal solidarity and grants special treatment to Catalonia.
The final decision rests with ERC's 8,700 members, who will vote on the agreement this Friday.
