Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) has officially approved a pre-agreement with the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) to support the investiture of Salvador Illa as the new president of the Generalitat.

In a closely contested internal vote, 53.5% of ERC members backed the deal, which includes significant fiscal autonomy for Catalonia, allowing the region to manage and collect all taxes.

The decision, however, has highlighted divisions within the party, with a notable 44.8% voting against the agreement.

ERC's leadership, led by Secretary General Marta Rovira, expressed satisfaction with the democratic process but acknowledged the need for vigilance in ensuring the agreement's implementation.

The high participation rate of 77% among members reflects the intense emotions surrounding this pivotal moment in Catalan politics, as the party prepares for a crucial congress in November.
