Felipe VI Appoints Women to Key Roles

Published: 2024-11-18

In a significant move towards modernizing the Spanish Royal Household, King Felipe VI has appointed two women to prominent positions, marking a historic shift in the institution's leadership.

Mercedes Araújo Díaz de Terán will become the new Secretary General, replacing Domingo Martínez Palomo, while Carmen Castiella Ruiz de Velasco will take over as Diplomatic Advisor from Alfonso Sanz Portolés.

These appointments are part of a broader effort by the King to rejuvenate the leadership team, which has traditionally been dominated by men.

Araújo, with a long career in parliamentary affairs, and Castiella, a seasoned diplomat, bring fresh perspectives to the roles.

This change not only increases female representation in the Royal Household but also lowers the average age of its leadership, aligning with Felipe VI's vision for a more dynamic and inclusive administration.
