Francesc Antich, former president of the Balearic Islands, passed away at 66 after battling cancer.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Antich was a prominent socialist leader and the first PSIB-PSOE president in the region.

He led the Balearic government during two terms, from 1999 to 2003 and 2007 to 2011, and was instrumental in forming the Pacte de Progrés coalition.

Antich also served as a senator and held various public roles, including president of the Balearic Port Authority.

Tributes poured in from political leaders, with Pedro Sánchez and Francina Armengol praising his legacy of progress and dialogue.

A public farewell will be held in Mallorca, followed by his burial in Algaida.
