Government Pressures PP on Immigration Reform

Published: 2024-11-22

The Spanish government is urging the Popular Party (PP) to resume negotiations on reforming the immigration law, focusing on the distribution of unaccompanied minor migrants.

This push comes after the PP halted talks in October.

The government has proposed two dates for a meeting, with support from the leaders of the Canary Islands and Ceuta, who are facing severe strain on their child care services.

Ceuta's capacity is exceeded by over 400%, prompting its president, Juan Jesús Vivas, to call for a structural solution and financial support.

The Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, emphasizes the need for a definitive response, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The government aims to amend Article 35 of the immigration law to mandate regional distribution of minors, a proposal previously blocked by opposition parties.
