Junqueras Reclaims ERC Leadership

Published: 2024-12-15

Oriol Junqueras has reclaimed the presidency of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) after defeating Xavier Godàs in a closely contested election.

Junqueras secured 52% of the votes, while Godàs garnered 42%, with an impressive 81% voter turnout.

This victory marks Junqueras' return to leadership after stepping down in June under internal party pressure.

Despite his win, the party remains deeply divided, with Godàs representing a faction advocating for a more focused "national left" approach.

Junqueras has called for unity and extended an olive branch to his opponents, inviting them to collaborate on future party policies.

However, tensions persist, with accusations of internal sabotage and a promise from Junqueras to investigate these claims.

The reelected leader has also signaled a tougher stance in negotiations with Spain's Socialist Party, demanding financial commitments for Catalonia.
