Madrid Court Upholds Begoña Gómez Probe

Published: 2024-10-08

The Madrid Provincial Court has decided to continue the investigation into Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, amidst allegations of influence peddling and corruption.

The court rejected calls to dismiss the case, finding sufficient grounds to proceed with the inquiry led by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado.

This decision comes despite criticisms from the defense and the State Attorney's Office, which argued that the investigation lacked concrete evidence and was overly broad.

The court, however, has narrowed the scope of the investigation, focusing on specific contracts and professional activities linked to Gómez.

This ruling has significant political implications, as it fuels ongoing debates and opposition attacks against the Sánchez government.

The case remains a focal point in Spanish politics, with both legal and public scrutiny intensifying.
