Madrid Court Expands Probe on PM's Wife

Published: 2024-09-24

The Provincial Court of Madrid has ruled that Judge Juan Carlos Peinado will continue investigating Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, for alleged corruption and influence peddling.

The court has decided to consolidate a new complaint by the ultra-Catholic group Hazte Oír into Peinado's ongoing investigation.

This complaint alleges that Gómez improperly appropriated software developed for a master's program she co-directed at the Complutense University of Madrid.

Despite the university's inability to confirm any irregularities, the court found enough connection between the cases to merge them.

The decision allows Peinado to explore potential new charges against Gómez, including misappropriation and misuse of university resources.

The case has sparked political controversy, with opposition parties demanding explanations from the government.
