Sánchez Faces Criticism Over Regional Financing

Published: 2024-09-20

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is facing criticism from the opposition party, Partido Popular (PP), over his handling of regional financing and infrastructure commitments.

Alfonso Rueda, President of the Xunta de Galicia, expressed dissatisfaction after a meeting with Sánchez, highlighting a lack of concrete commitments, particularly regarding the singular financing promised to Catalonia.

Rueda emphasized the need for multilateral discussions on regional financing, rejecting any bilateral agreements.

He also called for increased investment in Galicia's infrastructure, including the high-speed rail link to Portugal and the transfer of the AP-9 highway management.

Sánchez promised a Conference of Presidents focused on housing, but Rueda insisted on broader discussions, including financial matters.

The meeting reflects ongoing tensions between the central government and regional leaders over resource allocation and autonomy.
