Spain Debates Mandatory Distribution of Migrant Children

Published: 2024-07-13

The Spanish government is set to propose a reform to the Immigration Law, mandating the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors across all autonomous communities.

This move comes as the Canary Islands struggle with over 6,000 migrant children under their care.

The proposal, to be registered in Congress on Monday, aims to alleviate the pressure on border regions like Canarias, Ceuta, and Melilla.

However, the reform faces opposition from right-wing parties and lacks sufficient parliamentary support.

The government needs either the Popular Party (PP) or Junts to pass the law, but both have expressed reservations.

Meanwhile, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo urges for a rapid solution, emphasizing the humanitarian crisis.
