The Spanish government has proposed a new plan to distribute unaccompanied migrant minors arriving in the Canary Islands based on the population of each autonomous community.
This approach aims to address the saturation of reception centers in the Canary Islands by allocating minors proportionally to regions with larger populations.
The proposal, presented by Ministers Sira Rego and Ángel Víctor Torres, includes state funding to cover costs exceeding the capacity of local communities.
While the plan has been met with cautious optimism by the Canary government, the Popular Party (PP) remains skeptical, demanding more detailed financial assurances.
The ongoing negotiations are crucial for advancing the reform of the Foreigners Law, which seeks to make the redistribution of migrant minors mandatory across Spain.
