Spain's S-80 Submarine Program Advances

Published: 2024-11-28

Spain's ambitious S-80 submarine program is making significant strides despite facing numerous challenges.

The program, which began in 2003, aims to deliver four state-of-the-art submarines, with the S-81 Isaac Peral already in service.

The S-82 Narciso Monturiol is expected to be launched in mid-2025, with delivery by autumn 2026. Meanwhile, the S-83 Cosme García and S-84 Mateo García de los Reyes are scheduled for launch in 2027, with deliveries in 2028 and 2030, respectively.

A key feature of these submarines is the Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which allows them to remain submerged for extended periods, enhancing their stealth capabilities.

This technology, developed by Navantia, represents a significant advancement in naval engineering for Spain.

However, the program has faced setbacks, including delays in missile integration, with the Spanish Navy now considering the Norwegian Naval Strike Missile (NSM) for future armament.

Despite these challenges, the S-80 program continues to progress, marking a milestone in Spain's naval capabilities.
