Valencia Tragedy Halts Spanish Parliament

Published: 2024-10-30

The Spanish Parliament suspended its regular session on Wednesday in response to the devastating floods in Valencia, which have claimed at least 51 lives.

The decision to halt the session was proposed by Miguel Tellado of the PP and supported by Patxi López of the PSOE, reflecting a rare moment of political unity.

Despite the suspension, the government proceeded with an extraordinary session to validate a decree on RTVE's governance, sparking criticism from opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Feijóo condemned the decision as morally reprehensible, arguing that all political efforts should focus on the flood crisis.

The session began with a minute of silence for the victims, but quickly devolved into political disputes, highlighting tensions amid the national tragedy.
