Ayuso's Debt Proposal Sparks Debate

During the recent Conference of Presidents in Santander, Madrid's leader Isabel Díaz Ayuso stirred controversy by opposing a general debt forgiveness plan for Spain's autonomous communities, proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Ayuso argued that only Valencia, burdened by inherited debt and the recent DANA disaster, should receive such relief.

Her stance disrupted the unified position of her party, the PP, which had previously rejected selective debt pardons.

While some PP leaders reluctantly supported Ayuso's proposal, others, including socialist leaders, called for a fairer, nationwide approach.

The debate highlights ongoing tensions over regional financing and fiscal autonomy in Spain.
