Bus Drivers Strike for Early Retirement

Published: 2024-10-29

A nationwide bus drivers' strike in Spain, organized by major unions UGT and CC OO, has seen around 90,000 drivers participate in a 24-hour work stoppage.

The strike aims to highlight the demands for early retirement due to the hazardous nature of their work.

Despite some disruptions, including broken bus windows and delays in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, the strike has been largely peaceful.

The unions report an 80% participation rate among non-essential workers, with further strikes planned if demands are not met.

The government has imposed minimum service levels, which vary by region, to mitigate the impact on commuters.

The unions warn of an indefinite strike if negotiations do not progress.
