Canary Islands Seek Urgent Migrant Crisis Talks

Published: 2024-08-20

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has announced an upcoming meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to address the escalating migrant crisis in the archipelago.

Scheduled for Friday in La Palma, the meeting comes amid a surge in migrant arrivals, with centers for unaccompanied minors overwhelmed.

Clavijo emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the islands have exceeded their capacity to provide adequate care as per international treaties.

The Canary Islands currently host over 5,200 minors, far surpassing their capacity of 2,000, with projections of up to 7,000 more arrivals by year-end.

Clavijo seeks to discuss legislative changes to distribute the responsibility of caring for these minors across Spain's autonomous communities.

The meeting aims to foster cooperation and find sustainable solutions to the humanitarian crisis.
