Canary Islands Migration Crisis Talks

Published: 2024-08-23

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is set to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in La Palma to address the escalating migration crisis.

The Canary Islands are overwhelmed, hosting over 5,100 unaccompanied minors, far exceeding their capacity of 2,000. Clavijo is urging the central government to implement a decree to reform immigration laws and facilitate the redistribution of minors across Spain.

However, the proposal faces opposition from the Popular Party (PP), which demands a comprehensive plan including border control enhancements.

The meeting precedes Sánchez's diplomatic trip to Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia, aimed at strengthening migration control.

The situation remains tense as the Canary Islands brace for more arrivals, highlighting the urgent need for a coordinated national response.
