Constitutional Court Faces Amnesty Law Debate

Published: 2024-12-23

Spain's Constitutional Court is preparing to issue its first ruling on the controversial amnesty law, which grants pardons for crimes related to the Catalan independence movement.

The decision is expected by summer 2025, but the process faces delays due to unresolved recusals, including one involving conservative judge José Mario Macías.

Critics argue the law violates constitutional principles, while supporters defend its legality.

The court must also address 23 challenges against the law, including those from regional governments and political parties.

The outcome will set a precedent for future cases and could influence Spain's political landscape.
