Constitutional Court Faces Amnesties Debate

Published: 2024-09-11

The Spanish Constitutional Court has unanimously accepted the abstention of former Justice Minister Juan Carlos Campo from discussions on the controversial amnesty law.

Campo, who previously expressed that the law granting amnesty to Catalan independence leaders was unconstitutional, requested to abstain from related cases.

The court also admitted a challenge from the Supreme Court questioning the law's constitutionality, citing concerns over equality and legal security.

Meanwhile, magistrate José María Macías, despite his known opposition to the amnesty, has chosen not to abstain, believing his past opinions do not warrant exclusion from deliberations.

The court's decision on these matters will significantly impact the future of Catalan leaders involved in the independence movement.
