Garikoitz Aspiazu, known as 'Txeroki', a former leader of the ETA terrorist organization, has been transferred from a French prison to Martutene prison in the Basque Country, Spain.
This move allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence closer to his family and under the jurisdiction of the Basque regional administration.
Txeroki, who was arrested in 2008, was sentenced to 377 years in France for multiple crimes, including attempted murders and terrorist acts.
His transfer was facilitated by a request from French authorities and approved by Spain's National Court under European Union regulations.
The decision has sparked controversy, with victims' associations expressing concern over potential benefits he might receive in Spain.
Meanwhile, a planned event in Bilbao supporting ETA prisoners has been criticized for potentially glorifying terrorism and disrespecting victims.
