Andalusia, Spain has reported its first West Nile virus death of the summer.
A 71-year-old woman from Dos Hermanas, Sevilla, with pre-existing health conditions, succumbed to the virus on Tuesday.
Another case, a 72-year-old man, has been discharged from the hospital.
The virus, transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, has appeared earlier than usual this year due to a mild winter and rainy spring.
Health authorities have raised the risk level in Dos Hermanas from 3 to 5, prompting urgent action against adult mosquito populations.
Officials stress the importance of preventive measures, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
