Immigration Tops Spain's Concerns

Published: 2024-09-18

In a dramatic shift, immigration has surged to become the primary concern for Spaniards, surpassing traditional issues like unemployment, economic challenges, and political problems.

According to the latest barometer from the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS), 30.4% of Spaniards now view immigration as the country's most pressing issue, a significant increase from 16.9% in July.

This rise in concern coincides with a marked increase in irregular arrivals, particularly in the Canary Islands, where migrant landings have surged by 126%.

The political debate around immigration has intensified, with recent negotiations over the reform of the Ley de Extranjería stalling.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Maritime Rescue Service has been actively rescuing hundreds of migrants attempting perilous journeys to the Canary Islands.

As the situation evolves, the Spanish government faces mounting pressure to address the growing immigration challenge.
