The city of Lugo is in mourning following the sudden death of its mayor, Paula Alvarellos, who passed away at 61 after suffering a heart attack.
Alvarellos collapsed on Friday evening during the city's Carnival celebrations and was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.
A dedicated public servant, she had served as mayor for 13 months, succeeding Lara Méndez.
Tributes have poured in from across Spain, with political leaders, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, praising her as a progressive and committed leader.
Alvarellos was known for her work in urban planning and social reintegration programs.
