Migrant Surge Strains Canary Islands

Published: 2024-08-31

In recent days, the Canary Islands have witnessed a significant influx of migrants arriving by sea.

Maritime Rescue Services have been actively involved in rescuing and escorting several cayucos, small wooden boats, carrying hundreds of migrants from various regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan, and Syria.

Notably, two cayucos carrying 186 migrants were rescued near La Gomera and Gran Canaria, while another three boats brought 494 migrants to El Hierro.

The surge in arrivals has put a strain on local resources, with temporary accommodations reaching their limits.

The regional government is deploying additional support to manage the situation and ensure the well-being of the migrants.

Despite the challenges, all rescued individuals are reported to be in good health, with no immediate need for hospital transfers.
