Sánchez Eyes Meeting with Puigdemont

Published: 2024-12-23

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has expressed his willingness to meet with Carles Puigdemont, the exiled Catalan leader, even before an official amnesty is granted.

This move comes as Sánchez emphasizes the need to "turn the page" on the 2017 Catalan independence crisis.

Despite criticism from within his own party and opposition, Sánchez argues that political amnesty is already in effect, as approved by the Spanish Parliament.

Puigdemont, whose party Junts is crucial for the government’s stability, has been critical of Sánchez, accusing him of being untrustworthy.

Meanwhile, Sánchez highlighted Spain’s strong economic performance, tripling the EU’s growth rate, but acknowledged housing as a major challenge ahead.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the normalization of relations with Junts as a success of the amnesty law, despite ongoing tensions.
