Sánchez's Deal with Junts Sparks Debate

Published: 2025-01-29

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has secured the support of Junts to pass key measures, including pension increases and public transport subsidies.

This agreement required Sánchez to divide the controversial omnibus decree and accept a proposal for a parliamentary vote on a confidence motion, highlighting his political vulnerability.

Critics, including the opposition Popular Party, accuse Sánchez of excessive concessions to Junts and its leader, Carles Puigdemont, to maintain power.

The PP has yet to decide its stance on the measures but criticized the government for being "at the mercy" of Puigdemont.

Meanwhile, Junts also faces pressure to sustain the alliance, as new elections could weaken its influence.

The deal underscores the fragile balance of power in Spain's current political landscape.
