Sánchez's African Tour Tackles Migration Crisis

Published: 2024-08-27

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has embarked on a significant diplomatic tour across Mauritania, Gambia, and Senegal, aiming to address the escalating migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands.

This visit comes amid rising political pressure from opposition parties and concerns over the islands' capacity to manage the influx of migrants.

The tour focuses on enhancing 'circular migration' agreements, which allow temporary work opportunities for migrants in Spain, and strengthening border controls.

Despite previous efforts, the number of irregular migrants arriving in the Canary Islands has surged by 126% compared to last year.

Sánchez's agenda also includes economic initiatives, such as launching joint business committees and expanding digital connectivity in rural areas, to foster local development and reduce migration pressures.

The Spanish government acknowledges the complexity of the issue, emphasizing the need for sustained international cooperation and economic investment in the region.
