Spain's Top Cancer Center in Crisis

Spain's leading cancer research center, the CNIO, is facing a severe crisis due to outdated equipment and financial mismanagement.

With only one functional confocal microscope out of four, researchers are struggling to advance critical cancer studies.

Scientists blame the center's director, María Blasco, for poor leadership and misallocation of funds, including nearly €900,000 spent on an art program.

The center also faces a €4.5 million deficit, with no immediate plans to replace essential equipment.

The Spanish government has pledged support, but researchers demand urgent action and a change in leadership to restore the CNIO's global competitiveness.
