Spain's Workweek Debate Intensifies

Published: 2024-12-20

Spain's coalition government faces internal tensions over a proposed reduction in the workweek to 37.5 hours.

Vice President Yolanda Díaz criticized the Socialist Party (PSOE) for suggesting a delay to 2026, contrary to the 2025 agreement.

Díaz accused the PSOE of breaking promises and warned this could alienate voters.

Despite disagreements, Díaz secured a preliminary agreement with unions to implement the change by late 2025. The proposal, which includes stricter labor regulations and digital disconnection rights, now heads to Parliament.

However, its future remains uncertain as political negotiations continue.
