Veterinarians Protest New Antibiotics Rules

Veterinarians across Spain are protesting new regulations requiring them to log antibiotic prescriptions into a centralized system called Presvet.

While the system aims to combat antibiotic resistance, many veterinarians argue it creates excessive bureaucracy, delays urgent treatments, and limits their clinical judgment.

On February 11, clinics held a symbolic one-hour strike to demand legislative changes.

Critics say the system forces them to spend more time on paperwork than saving lives, and that it risks the health of animals by delaying care.

They also highlight difficulties in accessing specific medications for pets, which could lead to improper use and increased resistance.

A petition for reform has already gathered nearly 80,000 signatures, reflecting widespread discontent within the veterinary community.
