DGT Launches Major Traffic Operation

Published: 2024-08-14

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has launched a special traffic operation for the mid-August holiday, anticipating 8.2 million long-distance journeys across the country.

This operation, which runs from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday night, coincides with local festivities and the peak vacation period, leading to increased travel to coastal areas and second homes.

The DGT emphasizes the importance of road safety, urging drivers to avoid alcohol and drugs, and has intensified speed, alcohol, and drug checks.

In the Region of Murcia alone, 400,407 trips are expected, with 200 traffic officers deployed to manage the flow.

Alarmingly, Andalusia has seen a 54% rise in road fatalities compared to last year, prompting the DGT to focus additional resources there, including more traffic officers and aerial surveillance.

The operation aims to reduce accidents and ensure safe travel during this busy period.
