EU Divided Over Venezuela's Leadership

Published: 2024-09-20

The European Parliament has recognized Edmundo González as the legitimate president of Venezuela, a move supported by the European People's Party and some Portuguese socialists, despite opposition from the broader socialist group.

This decision highlights a significant divide within the EU, as Spanish socialists and other left-wing groups have rejected the recognition, citing concerns over past precedents like Juan Guaidó.

The resolution, however, does not include an international arrest warrant for Nicolás Maduro, although it urges the International Criminal Court to investigate human rights violations under his regime.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Senate, with support from Vox and Junts, has also called for González's recognition and an arrest warrant for Maduro, reflecting a broader political split on the issue within Europe.
