Spain's Congress Backs Venezuelan Opposition

Published: 2024-09-11

The Spanish Congress has approved a proposal by the Popular Party (PP) to recognize Edmundo González as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

This motion, supported by Vox, PNV, UPN, and CC, highlights the ongoing political debate surrounding Venezuela's leadership.

However, the Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, remains firm in its stance not to recognize González immediately.

Instead, it seeks a broader negotiation with European and Latin American partners to facilitate a peaceful transition of power from Nicolás Maduro.

Sánchez emphasizes the importance of a unified European approach and criticizes the opposition's pressure tactics.

Meanwhile, the absence of Junts deputies from the vote, due to their participation in Catalonia's Diada celebrations, adds another layer of complexity to the political dynamics in Spain.
