Spanish Congress Backs Venezuelan Opposition

Published: 2024-09-10

In a significant political move, the Spanish Congress is set to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as the president-elect of Venezuela.

This decision comes after the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) announced its support for a non-binding proposal by the Popular Party (PP), which is expected to pass with a majority.

The proposal, while symbolic, underscores the opposition's call for international recognition against Nicolás Maduro's regime.

Despite the symbolic nature of the vote, it highlights the ongoing political tensions in Spain, where Venezuela's situation is used as a political tool by major parties.

The Spanish government, however, maintains that any official recognition should be a collective decision by the European Union.

Meanwhile, the opposition in Venezuela views this as a crucial step in their fight for democracy.
