Spain Debates Recognition of Venezuelan Leader

Published: 2024-09-10

The Spanish Congress is set to debate a proposal by the Popular Party (PP) to recognize Edmundo González as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

This comes after González, who recently arrived in Spain as a political asylum seeker, was not recognized by the European Union or the international community.

The proposal, which includes nine points, is expected to face opposition from the PSOE, who support only parts of it, particularly those condemning human rights abuses in Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan exiles in Madrid plan to gather outside the Congress to support González's recognition.

The outcome of the vote may hinge on the stance of the PNV, as their decision could tip the balance in favor of the PP's proposal.

The debate highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding Venezuela's leadership and Spain's role in international diplomacy.
