Madrid and Aragón Challenge Amnesty Law

Published: 2024-09-09

The governments of Madrid and Aragón have both filed legal challenges against Spain's controversial Amnesty Law, citing constitutional concerns.

Madrid's President, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, criticized the law as "obscenely unconstitutional" and questioned the impartiality of three Constitutional Court judges due to their alleged ties to the PSOE.

Meanwhile, Aragón's government argues that the law undermines judicial independence and equality among Spaniards, claiming it breaches the separation of powers.

Both regions assert that the law disrupts the rule of law by excluding certain political offenses from judicial scrutiny.

These actions reflect broader regional opposition to the law, which is seen as a threat to democratic principles.
