The city of Madrid has decided to delay the implementation of stricter low-emission zone regulations initially set for January 2025. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida announced that the city will evaluate allowing certain vehicles without environmental labels to circulate, following a report by the Mobility Delegate, Borja Carabante.
This decision comes as Madrid records its best air quality levels in history, with a 16.5% reduction in pollution since 2023. Exceptions will be made for vehicles owned by self-employed individuals over 59, those with reduced mobility permits, and for hospital visits.
The delay has sparked criticism from opposition parties and environmental groups, who argue that the city should not backtrack on measures to combat pollution.
The city plans to reassess the impact of these regulations while maintaining current air quality improvements.
