The Balearic Islands are experiencing a significant surge in migrant arrivals, adding pressure to the ongoing migration crisis in Spain's Canary Islands and Ceuta.
Over the past two days, approximately 200 migrants, primarily from Algeria, have reached the islands, with 118 arriving in Formentera and Mallorca on Tuesday alone.
This influx is part of a growing trend since 2020, as favorable weather conditions have facilitated the journey from Algeria.
The Balearic government is struggling to accommodate the increasing number of migrants, with the local legal and social systems under strain.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of unaccompanied minors, prompting calls for additional support from the national government.
Despite the challenges, all recent arrivals are reported to be in good health, having avoided the severe weather that hit the region mid-week.
