Spain Reduces Workweek to 37.5 Hours

Published: 2024-12-21

Spain's Ministry of Labor has reached a landmark agreement with major unions to reduce the maximum legal workweek from 40 to 37.5 hours without salary cuts.

The reform, hailed as a historic labor achievement, will now proceed to Parliament for approval.

If passed, companies must implement the changes by December 31, 2025. The law also introduces stricter rules for tracking work hours, ensuring compliance through digital records, and imposes fines of up to €10,000 per worker for violations.

Part-time workers will see proportional pay increases, and employees will retain their right to disconnect from work outside hours.

The agreement excludes employer groups but is celebrated as a significant step forward for workers' rights.
