Spain Approves 37.5-Hour Workweek

Published: 2025-01-28

The Spanish government is set to approve a reduction in the standard workweek from 40 to 37.5 hours.

This decision follows weeks of negotiations between the Ministries of Economy and Labor, led by Yolanda Díaz and Carlos Cuerpo.

The measure, which will be discussed in the Council of Ministers next Tuesday, aims to be fully implemented by the end of 2025. The agreement respects terms negotiated with unions, including stricter time tracking and penalties for violations.

Small businesses, which will bear much of the impact, may see additional flexibility measures introduced during parliamentary discussions.

The move is seen as a step toward improving work-life balance and addressing labor inequalities, particularly for women.

However, its success depends on securing a parliamentary majority.
