A severe heatwave in Spain during July has led to an alarming increase in heat-related deaths, with estimates suggesting up to 771 fatalities.
The highest number of deaths occurred in the week of July 22-28, accounting for 337 of these cases.
The data, provided by the Carlos III Health Institute, indicates that the elderly, particularly those over 65, are the most affected, with 751 deaths reported in this age group.
Madrid recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths at 208, followed by Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha.
In response to the extreme temperatures, the Ministry of Health has launched a public awareness campaign urging citizens to stay hydrated and protect vulnerable individuals.
The situation reflects a broader trend in Europe, where heat-related mortality has risen significantly over the past two decades.
