Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia has sought asylum in Spain following intense political persecution in his home country.

González, who is believed to have won the July 28 presidential elections, faced charges and a detention order in Venezuela.

His move to Spain was facilitated by secret negotiations, with the Spanish government citing humanitarian and political reasons for granting asylum.

Despite his exile, González remains committed to advocating for the recognition of the election results, urging the international community to support Venezuela's democratic restoration.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claims victory and dismisses the opposition's leadership, while the international community continues to challenge the legitimacy of his win.
