Cable Failure Disrupts Madrid High-Speed Trains

Published: 2024-08-20

A significant disruption occurred at Madrid's Chamartín station due to an electrical cable failure, causing delays in high-speed train services.

The incident, which began at 3:35 PM, affected three of the eight high-speed rail lines, leading to delays of 30-40 minutes for six trains.

Adif, the railway infrastructure manager, implemented emergency protocols, including regulating station access and deploying additional security and support staff.

Some trains were rerouted to Atocha station to alleviate congestion.

Despite the presence of riot police, Adif clarified there were no public order issues.

Earlier in the day, Atocha station also faced energy supply problems, which were resolved by midday.

The disruptions have sparked criticism from local officials towards the national transport ministry.
