A tragic landslide on the island of Madeira has claimed the life of a 21-year-old Spanish tourist and injured her parents.
The family was hiking on the Levada da Água de Alto trail near the town of Santana when the accident occurred.
The trail, popularized by social media, is not officially recommended as it is primarily used for irrigation.
Emergency services, including 17 personnel and several vehicles, responded to the scene.
The young woman was reportedly struck by falling rocks, while her parents sustained minor injuries and required psychological support.
The Spanish Consulate in Lisbon is assisting the family.
This incident is unrelated to the recent wildfires affecting the region.
