The long-awaited 'Operación Campamento' in Madrid has finally been approved, marking a significant urban development in the city's southwest.
After 35 years of delays, the project will see the construction of 10,700 new homes, primarily public housing, on the former military barracks in the Latina district.
The plan, supported by PP, PSOE, and Vox, faced opposition from Más Madrid, who criticized it as insufficient for addressing the city's housing crisis.
The project covers over 2.1 million square meters, with 65% of the homes offering some form of protection.
Construction is set to begin by late 2025, with the first phase delivering 1,651 homes.
Additionally, the A-5 highway will be buried to improve local mobility, transforming the area into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.
This development is seen as a major step in regenerating a neglected part of Madrid.
