Spain Faces Extreme Heatwave

Published: 2024-07-30

Spain is bracing for extreme heat as a mass of hot air from Africa sweeps across the country, pushing temperatures above 40°C in many regions.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange alerts for 16 areas, including Madrid, Andalusia, and Catalonia, where the heat is expected to peak between 1 PM and 7 PM.

Alongside the soaring temperatures, the remnants of a DANA weather system are causing dry storms and dust in the atmosphere, leading to poor air quality.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.

The heatwave is expected to persist, with tropical nights becoming common, particularly in the southern regions.

As the month of August approaches, the combination of high temperatures and potential storms raises concerns about health risks and wildfires.
