Spain Introduces 'Climate Leave' for Workers

Published: 2024-11-29

The Spanish government has introduced a groundbreaking legislative change to support workers during climate-related emergencies.

The new "climate leave" policy allows employees to take up to four days off, fully paid, during catastrophic weather events, with the possibility of extension if conditions persist.

This initiative, part of a broader package of measures following the devastating DANA storm, aims to protect workers' rights and safety.

Employers are now required to inform unions of any operational changes during such events.

The policy, spearheaded by Vice President Yolanda Díaz, emphasizes the government's commitment to "green rights" and worker safety amid climate challenges.

The legislation will be reviewed by Congress within 30 days.
