Valencia Flood Alert Controversy Unfolds

Published: 2024-11-12

In the wake of devastating floods in Valencia, a political controversy has erupted over the timing of emergency alerts.

President Carlos Mazón of the Generalitat has faced criticism for the delayed warning to citizens, which was sent at 20:12, after the floods had already claimed lives.

Mazón defended the delay, claiming the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar (CHJ) deactivated the hydrological alert three times, a statement refuted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The Ministry clarified that the CHJ does not have the authority to activate or deactivate alerts, which is the responsibility of the regional emergency services.

The Ministry emphasized that the CHJ provides continuous data updates, but the decision to issue alerts lies with the Generalitat.

This dispute highlights the challenges in managing emergency communications during natural disasters.
