Spain Braces for First Major Heatwave of Summer

Published: 2024-07-17

Spain is preparing for its first significant heatwave of the summer, with temperatures expected to soar across much of the country.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued warnings as temperatures are forecast to exceed 40°C (104°F) in several regions.

The heatwave, caused by a warm air mass from North Africa, is expected to peak on Friday, affecting the southern half and northeastern quadrant of the peninsula most severely.

Areas like the Guadalquivir Valley could see temperatures reaching 42-44°C (107-111°F).

The hot spell is predicted to last from Thursday through the weekend, with some regions experiencing tropical nights where temperatures won't drop below 24°C (75°F).

AEMET also warns of potential air quality issues due to Saharan dust.
