Spain Braces for Intense Heatwave with Temperatures Soaring to 44°C

Published: 2024-07-16

Spain is preparing for its first major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures expected to soar above 40°C in many areas.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a special warning for the coming days, particularly affecting the southern half and northeastern quadrant of the peninsula.

The Guadalquivir Valley could see temperatures reaching 42-44°C, while other regions like the Guadiana, Tajo, and Ebro valleys may experience 40-42°C.

This heatwave is caused by a high-pressure system over Algeria, bringing in hot, dry air from North Africa.

The peak of the heatwave is anticipated on Friday, with tropical nights expected in many areas as temperatures won't drop below 24°C.

AEMET warns that this intense heat could persist until mid-next week.
